MARI and PICASSO

MARI and PICASSO are platforms designed to support cross-border trading of regulation energy (RE) in the European Union. Introduced by ENTSO-E (European Network of Transmission System Operators), their main goal is to improve the stability and efficiency of electrical grids, increase competition in the ancillary services market and support the integration of renewable energy sources.

  • MARI (Manually Activated Reserves Initiative) is a platform for the exchange of manually activated regulation energy (mFRR) with an activation time horizon of up to 750 seconds. This service is used to address larger and more long-term deviations in the grid.

  • PICASSO (Platform for the International Coordination of Automated Frequency Restoration and Stable System Operation) is a platform for the exchange of regulation energy (RE) with automatic frequency restoration reserves (aFRR) within an activation time horizon of up to 300 seconds. This service is intended for the rapid restoration of grid frequency.

These platforms support flexible and transparent stabilization of the power grid without the need for guaranteed availability from RE providers. They contribute to reducing costs, increasing the reliability of energy supply and a more efficient use of available resources.
